ORLANDO – When Tiger Woods signed a long-term contract extension with Nike Golf last year, it assured that Woods will spend his entire career with the Swoosh. And with Woods pursuing some of golf’s biggest records in golf, Nike already has begun planning how to celebrate those milestones. While Cindy Davis, the president of Nike Golf, conceded that some of those celebrations may be three, five, or even 10 years in the making, it hasn’t stopped her team from developing the creative. They started working on it last year.
“We shared with him some of our plans a couple of weeks ago when we met with him,” Davis said.
In an interview at the PGA Merchandise Show, she guarded that plan like high-level state secrets, but did let slip that the number 83 “is a big deal.”
Indeed it is. With 79 PGA Tour victories, it seems only a matter of time before Tiger eclipses Sam Snead’s record of 82 career Tour titles.
“We’re going to have a lot of opportunities to celebrate Tiger’s performance accomplishments in a way that only Nike can do with him,” she said.
Does Davis think Tiger will pass Snead this year?
“His track record suggests it could be the case,” she said.
Given his eight victories at Torrey Pines, site of this week’s Farmers Insurance Open, Tiger could draw closer to Slammin’ Sam this week.
Let the countdown begin.
