Phil Mickelson looks like he will give it a go this week at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.
The defending champion and also the 1996 and 2005 winner of the event, Mickelson is grouped with Bill Haas and Ryan Moore for the first two rounds at TPC Scottsdale’s Stadium Course in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Mickelson withdrew after the second round of last week’s Farmers Insurance Open because of back pain. He flew to Dalton, Ga., to see back specialist Tom Boers and it was determined that Mickelson’s facet joints had locked up.
“Tom restored my mobility, but I still have inflammation that will take a week or two to subside,” said Mickelson, who played college golf at Arizona State.
If Mickelson plays, it will be his 25th career start at the tournament.
Other notable groups include last week’s winner Scott Stallings, Rickie Fowler and Hunter Mahan; Webb Simpson, Ian Poulter and Keegan Bradley; and Harris English, Brandt Snedeker and Lee Westwood.
