Ghim grabs signature victory at CB&I Boys

Doug Ghim was taught the importance of hard work and patience at a young age.

Ghim’s father, Jeff, didn’t let Doug play in a tournament until he felt his son was ready – Doug learned the game at 5 years old. Seven years after that, he played his first tournament.

Those early lessons paid off many more times throughout Ghim’s junior golf career – especially in 2013, when Ghim notched six top-10 finishes in major junior events but couldn’t record a victory. Ghim’s confidence and attitude never wavered, and he remained positive.

Now, Ghim finally has that elusive signature victory.

The Texas signee from Arlington Heights, Ill., won the AJGA CB&I Boys Invitational on Monday at the Club at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands, Texas. Ghim closed with a 6-under 66 on the Fazio Championship Course to finish at 12-under 204, five shots ahead of Andy Zhang and Carl Yuan, who tied for second.

Ghim made six birdies en route to an opening 6-under 30 on the front nine. He shot even par on the back nine to seal the victory.

Cameron Champ, who also shot a final-round 66, tied for fourth with Alvaro Ortiz. Austin Connelly, who was runner-up at the Jones Cup, tied for sixth with Davis Riley and Wilson Furr.

Defending champ Brad Dalke tied for 13th at 1 over.
