Tom Watson called them two of the greatest up-and-downs he had ever seen, and not many would argue.
Victor Dubuisson’s recovery shots on the 19th and 20th holes of his championship match against Jason Day on Sunday at the WGC-Accenture Match Play were certainly impressive, even if they just delayed his eventual defeat to Day in 23 holes.
After forcing extra holes at the par-4 18th by getting up and down from a greenside bunker, Dubuisson, a shy 23-year-old from Cannes, France, hit his approach at the par-4 first, the first extra hole, over the green and next to a jumping cholla. His third shot, though, would settle 4 feet from the hole, and he’d make the par to extend the match.
A hole later, at the par-4 ninth, Dubuisson again found trouble, and again he hit his third shot from the desert close (7 feet) to set up another par save.
