The Founders Cup has landed a new title sponsor for 2014, Golfweek has learned. JTBC, a South Korean cable television network, has signed on to replace RR Donnelley.
The JTBC Founders Cup – the tour’s first domestic stop – will take place March 20-23 at Wildfire Golf Club in Phoenix.
The event, LPGA commissioner Mike Whan’s brainchild, got off to a rough start in 2011 when controversy brewed among star players who were unimpressed with the idea of a mock purse, in which all proceeds went to charity.
The current, revised format includes a standard purse of $1.5 million (real money) with an emphasis on remembering the past, celebrating the present and paying it forward to the future.
In its three years, the Founders Cup has raised more than $1.5 million for LPGA-USGA Girls Golf. Prior to the start of this event, the LPGA said roughly 5,000 girls participated in the Girls Golf program annually. They expected more than 30,000 to be involved in 2013.
