With 4-footers for birdie on the par-3 17th and par-5 18th at Newport Beach (Calif.) CC, Fred Couples won his second Toshiba Classic thanks to a 5-under 66 Sunday that lifted him a shot clear of Bernhard Langer, Colin Montgomerie and Steve Pate.
Montgomerie’s 62 Sunday was the week’s best round, while Pate shot 66. Langer capped a 70 by hitting his approach at the 18th up against a hospitality tent, taking a drop and chipping to about 20 feet; his birdie try could have forced a playoff, but he missed left.
Couples had won the Toshiba in 2010. His play this week was consistent – opening with 65 Friday and shooting 67 Saturday. He played the 17th and 18th in 5 under for the week, his only par coming in the first round. Couples was runner-up at this event last year.
Five players finished T-5: Michael Allen, Scott Dunlap, Jeff Hart, Mark O’Meara and Kenny Perry.
2014 U.S. Ryder Cup captain Tom Watson, who had tied for Saturday’s low round with a 63, shot 70 Sunday to finish T-20 at 9 under. Defending champ David Frost finished T-27 at 8 under, rebounding from an opening-round 72 with rounds of 67 and 66.
