World No. 5 Phil Mickelson and Matt Kuchar have committed to next week’s Shell Houston Open on the PGA Tour, according to the tournament’s website.
Mickelson finished T-16 in Houston last year, when it was two weeks prior to the Masters, after missing the cut at the 2013 Arnold Palmer Invitational; he then skipped the Valero Texas Open and took a week off to prepare in Augusta. He said then that he likes to play the week before a major championship. This year he skipped the Palmer and will play both Texas events.
Players have until Friday to commit to the Shell Houston Open, which takes place the week before the Masters at Augusta National, or to withdraw without penalty.
Six of the top 11 players in the OWGR are set to play, as Mickelson and Kuchar figure to be joined by Henrik Stenson, Rory McIlroy, Sergio Garcia and Dustin Johnson.
Also committing to the Shell Houston Open on Tuesday; Ian Poulter, Webb Simpson and Jimmy Walker.
Defending champion D.A. Points and 2012 winner Hunter Mahan are in the field, which boasts 14 players who have won majors.
