Brandon Smith had been dreaming of winning his first AJGA event for quite some time.
“I’ve been dreaming about winning forever,” said Smith, of Frisco, Texas, who shot a final-round, 1-under 71 to wrap up a one-shot victory at the AJGA Under Armour/Hunter Mahan Championship Sunday at Stonebriar Country Club’s Fazio Course in Frisco, Texas.
“I started calm, prepared, and composed off the first tee which led to my first three birdies (on the first three holes). I tried not to think too far ahead and fell into a good place. This win means a lot.”
Smith, who started the second and final round one shot off the lead, finished at 3-under 141. Philip Barbaree of Shreveport, La., was second at 2-under 142.
Jordy LaBarbera of Allen, Texas, also notched her first AJGA win, shooting 2-under 70 to finish at 3-under 141, three shots clear of Alexis Sadeghy of Edmond, Okla.
“I did not make a bogey on the front nine so I was just kind of going smooth and steady and taking it slow,” said LaBarbera, who finished with three birdies, including one at No. 18, and just one bogey.
“It’s awesome to win here. I had a bunch of fans out there watching so it was pretty cool to win for the first time so close to home.”
Maddie Szeryk of Allen, Texas finished third at 1-over 145.
