Troy won its first conference championship in its Division I history, dating back to 1993, at the Steelwood Country Club in Loxley, Ala., Wednesday. The Trojans became Sun Belt champions after finishing six strokes ahead of runner-up Texas State at 32-over 896.
Freshman Fatima Fernandez Cano led the team, winning medalist honors after a one-hole playoff. Troy placed four golfers in the top 10 individually. Cano shot an 8-over 80 during the second round of the tournament, but a 2-under 70 in the opening round and a 71 in the final round helped lead her to the victory.
“Going into today, the goal was to play my best – to be patient and try to do my best,” Cano said in a release. “It was a new day. I was trying to be the best I could be … take it shot by shot and hole by hole.”
Texas State (38 over), South Alabama (58 over), Arkansas-Little Rock (63 over) and Georgia State (71 over) made up the remainder of the top five.
The win gives Troy a spot in one of three NCAA regional tournament, which will be played May 8-10.
