Central Florida led through 18 holes and again through 36, but it was the Louisville Cardinals that fought back and claimed the first American Athletic Association title.
Louisville, the No. 35 team in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings, took a lead with two groups left on the course en route to a one-stroke victory over the No. 17 Knights. Junior Emily Haas led the Cardinals, shooting a 1-under 71 on the final day and finishing in second, despite a double bogey on No. 16.
The Cardinals’ 11-over 299 on the final day of the tournament was the low round of the week. UCF shot a 16-over 304, its lowest round of the tournament, but it was not enough to keep the lead.
SMU’s Jenny Haglund took medalist honors, shooting two straight rounds under par to close the tournament and finish at 2-over 218. She beat out Haas, the runner up, by five strokes.
The win was Louisville’s first conference title since its Big East Championship in 2010. The Cardinals will join the Atlantic Coast Conference this summer.
