Stacy Lewis’ second straight 3-under-par 69 moved her to the lead of the Swinging Skirts LPGA Classic on Friday in Daly City, Calif., one shot ahead of Lydia Ko and first-round leader Karine Icher during a day that saw a rain delay.
Lewis hit 15 greens and 12 of 14 fairways as her consistency put her atop the leaderboard. Ko, playing in the same group, carded a 71 a day after shooting 68.
“We knew it was going to be a long day – that’s the way I took it – one shot at a time, and tried to get the ball in the hole,” Lewis said. “That’s what I tried to do. Get it in the hole as fast as I could. Fortunately I was able to do that and make a couple putts.
“I think anything under par today is a good score.”
Ko, 16, had a simple plan: emulate the veteran and former World No. 1.
“Yeah, I tried to follow Stacy’s lead. Following Stacy you’re going the right direction for sure,” Ko said. “. . . I was pretty happy with my 71. You know, sometimes I didn’t hit it in the most ideal positions and it’s not nice being like way right like on No. 2 and you’ve got trees everywhere.”
Icher, who started the day with a two-shot lead, shot 73 to slip to T-2. Icher managed just one birdie against two bogeys as she couldn’t overcome missing half her fairways and hitting just 12 greens.
“It’s a tough golf course,” Icher said. “You can be quick in trouble, or if you’re playing well, like yesterday I did think it goes pretty well‑‑ but today with the wind and the rain it’s definitely a tough day.”
Inbee Park took advantage of three straight birdies at Nos. 13-15 for a 68 that atoned for a first-round 73 and has her T-4 at 3 under with Ilhee Lee and Mika Miyazato.
Jessica Korda (77-73) and Charley Hull (73-77) finished the day two shots outside the projected cut line of 4 over, while Brittany Lincicome (72-82) finished six shots outside.
