Gaby Coello has given a verbal commitment to play college golf for Georgia. Coello, ranked No. 22 by Golfweek in the Class of 2016, also visited Florida, and considered Oklahoma State, Tulane and Wake Forest.
Coello is a sophomore at Windermere (Fla.) Preparatory School by way of Maracay, Venezuela. As a member of Windermere Prep’s varsity girls team, Coello has recorded two top-5 individual finishes at the state championship. Windermere won the team title in 2012.
After visiting the Georgia campus in Athens, Coello knew she was hooked. Head coach Josh Brewer and assistant coach Whitney Wade gave the program a homey feel, Coello said, and she knew it was the right fit academically, too. She plans to major in business.
“The (golf) facilities are just breathtaking, and they have everything to help an athlete excel,” Coello said of Georgia.
Coello played for the Venezuelan national Ttam at last year’s Copa Los Andes and South American Junior Championship. Last fall, Coello advanced to match play at the AJGA Polo Golf Junior Classic and was fourth at the Publix Junior Classic. She is slated to play the AJGA Rolex Girls Junior next month.
