PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – The growth of professional golf continues to spread its tournaments southward into Latin America in the run-up to the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Golfweek has learned that a new Web.com Tour event will be held outside of Cartagena, Colombia in March 2015.
The tournament will be played at Karibana Golf Club, a Nicklaus Design course, according to a source with the Colombian Golf Federation. A PGA Tour official said the new tournament home will become a TPC facility, joining TPC Cancun as the only TPC courses outside the U.S.
Earlier, there were discussions about moving the World Golf Championships Match Play Championship, which is seeking a new title sponsor, to Colombia, but the sponsorship dollars didn’t add up.
The Web.com offers its members 25 tournaments this season, five of which are held in Latin America. The circuit has played in Bogota since 2010 and opened its 2014 season there for the Pacific Rubiales Colombia Championship.
Web.com Tour spokesman Jeff Adams would say only that an official announcement will be made Tuesday.
