Schreiner University won its first NCAA Division III Men’s Championship May 16 in only its second appearance.
The Mountaineers, of Kerrville, Texas, shot 33-over 1,185 to win by five shots over Oglethrope University at Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C.
Schreiner won four of its six tournaments this spring, including three of the last four. The Mountaineers were runner-up in the other two spring starts.
“We’re so happy for the guys,” Schreiner head coach Ron Macosko said. “The men’s program has been special all year. . . . This achievement belongs to everyone associated with Schreiner golf because we’re all one big family.”
Cheyne Kendall finished second at even-par 288 to pace Schreiner. Teammate Jimmy Keener tied for third.
Bobby Holden shot 9-under 279 to win the individual title by nine shots over Kendall. Holden is the second national champion for the Redlands, Calif., school. Bob Osborne won the individual title in 1984.
“The key was remaining mentally tough and staying patient all the way through the tournament,” Holden said. “I got to the last hole and did not actually know I was in first place, but I had a feeling when my coach started walking down the fairway with me that I was in good shape, and after I made the final putt, I found out that I had won.”
