BETHESDA, Md. – For the past few years, Titleist has used the Quicken Loans National (formerly known as the AT&T National) as the place where it debuts new clubs to PGA Tour players. Last season, the 714 irons appeared on the range at Congressional Country Club, and in 2012 it was the 913 woods. On June 23, Titleist unveiled the 915 driver family.
Although Titleist’s PGA Tour reps declined to talk about specifics, the biggest difference between the 915D2 and 915D3 drivers and their predecessors, the 913D2 and 913D3, is the addition of a channel in the sole of the clubs, just behind the face. Labeled the Active Recoil Channel, it appears to be a mechanism that would allow the face of the drivers to flex more easily at impact, which would help to increase ball speed.
The new 915 drivers appear to have the same adjustable hosel mechanism that is available on the 913 drivers. The clubs also have a weight in the back of the sole, like the 913 drivers, although it is more triangular in shape.
Among the Titleist staff pros who tested the drivers early Monday were Jordan Spieth and Charley Hoffman.
Traditionally, Titleist products that have debuted in June have been made available to the public in November.
