BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – They might have been rivals this spring, but for one glorious night this week, three young members of Vestavia Country Club were united in an embrace as strong as any SEC allegiance.
LSU teammates Stewart Jolly (from left) and Smylie Kaufman and Alabama’s Tom Lovelady pose with commemorative plaques presented by the club Monday night in the Vestavia Hills section of Birmingham. Jolly, who won the recent Northeast Amateur, will be a senior at LSU. He finished the spring at 29th in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings and was a third-team All-American. Kaufman, a recent graduate, and Lovelady, who will be a junior, also ranked among the top 70 in the Golfweek/Sagarins for two of college golf’s perennial powers.
As for that NCAA semifinal showdown May 27 at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.? The Vestavia Hills membership no doubt found itself divided as Lovelady edged Kaufman, 1 up, in an Alabama victory that propelled the Crimson Tide to the NCAA title.
This week at Vestavia Hills, all that seemed to be in the past.
