World Amateur Golf Ranking: No. 6 (up 50 spots from last week)
Hometown: Arlington Heights, Ill.
School: Freshman, Texas
2014 summer highlights: Quarterfinals, Western Amateur (captured stroke-play medalist honors); T-15, Porter Cup; Runner up, U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship; East Team, Wyndham Cup; Fourth, AJGA’s Rolex Tournament of Champions; T-23, Sunnehanna Amateur
Why he’s dangerous: Just like other match play tournaments he’s played in, the U.S. Amateur is the perfect setup for Ghim. All he has to do is shoot decent numbers to get into the Round of 64 and from there, he’s all set.
With the help of his father of the bag, Ghim has a confidence about him that when he gets into match play that no one can match his work ethic and focus – or at least its hard to.
For the most part, he keeps cool under pressure. He was down early in both the semifinals and final match of the PubLinks, but fought back over the last few holes to get it back to all square and either win the match or take it to extra holes.
Ghim has the ability to go far in this event, if again, fatigue doesn’t catch up with the teenager as he has had a busy summer on the road. This could finally be his breakthrough moment before stepping onto the Texas campus this fall.
