Players to watch: Golfweek Senior Match Play

Once play begins Aug. 10 at the inaugural Golfweek Senior National Match Play Championship, the winner will have a considerable amount of golf to play to claim the trophy. A senior and super-senior bracket will be whittled to one man each over three days at the Dormie Club in West End, N.C.

Paul Schlachter

Hometown: Bridgeville, Pa.

Division: Senior

The scoop: Schlachter Golfweek‘s match-play event at the end of a successful summer of senior golf. Schlachter won the Dave King Senior on July 30 when he edged George Kapetanakis by one shot. Schlachter opened that event with a first-round 68 at Evergreen Country Club in Haymarket, Va. Earlier in July, he also won the Jack Hesler at Wedgewood Country Club in Powell, Ohio.

Peter Van Ingen

Hometown: New York, N.Y.

Division: Senior

The scoop: At No. 9 in the most current Golfweek ranking, Van Ingen carries the second-best ranking in the field among seniors. Van Ingen fared very well in the Society of Seniors Spring Class (seventh) and the Society of Seniors Senior Masters (eighth) earlier this year.

Ken Larney

Hometown: Tinley Park, Ill.

Division: Senior

The scoop: Larney, No. 17 in the latest Golfweek Senior Rankings, has had a trio of top-10 finishes so far this year. He was fourth at the Society of Seniors Spring Classic, seventh at the Golfweek Senior National Championship and sixth at the Kingsway Senior.

Ted Smith

Hometown: Wilkinson, Ind.

Division: Super Senior

The scoop: Smith is the top-ranked player in Golfweek‘s Super Senior Rankings. Earlier this season, Smith won the super senior division at both the Lupton Memorial (a tournament that used stableford scoring) and the Senior Azalea Amateur.

Walt Martin

Hometown: Oakton, Va.

Division: Super Senior

The scoop: The retired Naval officer has spent his life dabbling in professional golf and amateur golf, in addition to serving his country. He finished 2013 as the No. 2-ranked super senior in Golfweek’s rankings, and is No. 7 in the most current rankings.
