World Amateur Golf Ranking: No. 2
Hometown: Wilmer, Ala.
School: Sophomore, Alabama
2014 summer highlights: T-69, Western Amateur; T-8, Southern; Team USA, Palmer Cup; MC, U.S. Open
Why he’s dangerous: After winning the Phil Mickelson Award as freshman of the year and helping lead Alabama to its second NCAA Championship in as many years, Shelton has played in only a handful of tournaments this summer compared to other players.
However, we know from his first season at Alabama that he can compete with anyone at any given time. He won three times and had five other top-five finishes in his 12 starts.
As for match play, he went 3-0 at NCAAs and then went 2-2 (1-1 as a single) for Team USA at the Palmer Cup.
What was impressive about NCAAs was that he got down early in all three of his matches and flipped them when the team needed them most, especially in the finals against Oklahoma State. If Shelton didn’t turn his match in favor of the Crimson Tide, who knows what might have happened. He’s gritty and will never give up on himself or his team for that matter.
Even though it’s an off year for the Walker Cup, Shelton is already proving to U.S. captain John ‘Spider’ Miller why he’s one of the best amateurs in the world both in stroke and match play.
