The only woman standing between Mirim Lee and her first LPGA Tour title was nine-time winner and 2013 Rolex Player of the Year Inbee Park.
But the 23-year-old rookie rose to the occasion, making birdie on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff to beat out Park and take the Meijer LPGA Classic title.
Lee shot a 2-under 69 Sunday at Blythefield Country Club in Grand Rapids, Mich., finishing the tournament at 14 under. She entered the final round trailing Park by 1 stroke, but had four birdies through 18 holes, with the biggest of the four coming as a response to making bogey on the par-3 14th.
Lee missed the cut at two of the last three tournaments she played heading into the Meijer LPGA Classic. She previously held one top 10 in her LPGA career.
Park started her round Sunday with two birdies on the first three holes, but she played the remainder of the course at 1 over, with a bogey coming on the par-3 14th.
Suzann Pettersen made a run on Sunday, but a bogey on 16 pushed her out of reach. She finished in third, one-stroke behind Park and Lee at 13 under.
Haru Nomura placed fourth at 10 under, and three players tied for fifth at 9 under—Sandra Gal, Amy Yang and Line Vedel.
A few notables earned top-15 finishes: Cristie Kerr (T-9), Stacy Lewis (11), Lydia Ko (T-12) and Paula Creamer (T-12).
