Fred Couples birdied the first playoff hole at Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club to defeat Billy Andrade at the Champions Tour’s Shaw Charity Classic.
Couples shot a 9-under 61, a course record, in the final round in Calgary, Alberta, to vault up the leaderboard into a tie for first with Andrade – who almost matched the new mark with a 62. Both players finished at 15-under 195.
In the playoff, Andrade went for the green in two but pulled it into the grandstands. He took a drop but couldn’t convert for birdie from 30 feet. After seeing what Andrade did, Couples decided to lay up. He hit his third shot within a foot of the cup and tapped in for the win.
This is the 54-year-old’s second victory of the season and 11th overall on the Champions Tour. In eight events this season, he hasn’t finished worse than T-15, though he was disqualified from the Regions Traditions event at the end of May.
Steve Lowery and Joe Daley, the 36-hole leader, finished in third at 13-under 197.
