The 2014-15 began for two of the most notable teams in college golf, but it was Kennesaw State that stole the show on day one of the Carpet Capital Collegiate.
Alabama, winner of back-to-back national championships, and Georgia Tech, the No. 3 team in Golfweek’s fall men’s countdown, may have been the teams to watch heading into the tournament, but its the Owls that lead at The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face, Ga.
Kennesaw State shot a 7-under 281, led by Jimmy Beck, Kelby Burton and Austin Vick, who all sit in a tie for fifth or better through one round.
LSU’s Benjamin Taylor had the round of the day, posting a bogey-free 5-under 67. He sits in a tie for the individual with Chattanooga’s Andrew Weathers and helped his team earn a spot at second place, posting a 6 under.
North Carolina and Wake Forest are tied for third at 2 under, and Alabama and Clemson share fifth place at 1 under. The rest of the field is over par.
William Register, one of Golfweek‘s freshmen to watch, helped North Carolina on day one, posting a 3-under 69 in his first collegiate round. He’s tied for third.
Notable individuals include: Clemson’s Cody Proveaux (T-10), Georgia Tech’s Ollie Schniederjans (T-18), South Carolina’s Caleb Sturgeon (T-24) and Alabama’s Robby Shelton (T-10) and Tom Lovelady (T-52), who will look to lead the team in its national title defense.
Round two of the 54-hole tournament will begin tomorrow.
