Alabama went wire-to-wire for its third straight victory at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate.
The Crimson Tide capped a 10-under 830 with a final-round 3-under 277 Tuesday at Old Overton Club in Vestavia Hills, Ala., to win by 13 shots over Florida State, the second-ranked team in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings. Tom Lovelady’s closing 6-under 64 moved him into a tie for eighth at even par while Dru Love (fifth, 3 under) and Robby Shelton (fourth, 5 under) also notched top-10 finishes for No. 21 Alabama.
Mississippi State’s Ben Wood took medalist honors at 12-under 198, four shots better than top-ranked amateur Ollie Schniederjans of Georgia Tech and Hank Lebioda of Florida State. Wood closed with rounds of 63-64 after opening with a 71.
UNLV was third at 9 over while Alabama-Birmingham (12 over) and Arkansas (13 over) were fourth and fifth, respectively. Georgia Tech, ranked fifth by Golfweek, finished sixth at 16 over.
