Fortunes have changed for ’09 major champions

Cue to Frank Sinatra singing “It Was A Very Good Year,” for this remembrance to the 2009 PGA Tour season. For Angel Cabrera (Masters), Lucas Glover (U.S. Open), Stewart Cink (Open Championship) and Y.E. Yang (PGA) it was most certainly a very good year, as each won a major.

Their fortunes on a roll, they were ranked 16th (Cink), 20th (Glover), 25th (Cabrera) and 31st (Yang) at season’s end, with no worries regarding spots into the major championships for the immediate future.

Ah, but how that picture has changed. Though Cabrera remains in view regarding the world order (he’s ranked 75th), the others have plummeted: Cink to 193, Glover to 612 and Yang to 639. What also has evaporated are the exemptions into the major championships.

Five-year rides into the Masters ended in 2014 for Glover, Cink and Yang, and Glover isn’t exempt into any of the 2015 majors. Cabrera (Masters), Cink (Open Championship), and Yang (PGA) can at least count on one major, thanks to their respective past-champion status.

Glover did win the 2011 Wells Fargo Championship and Cabrera the 2014 Greenbrier Classic, but Cink and Yang have not won on Tour since taking down Tom Watson and Tiger Woods, respectively, with their summer magic in ’09.
