Kansas State senior Kyle Weldon opened with a 3-under 69 Thursday at the New Year’s Invitational, taking a one-stroke lead among a strong field.
Weldon leads Chris Selfridge by one at St. Petersburg (Fla.) Country Club. Twelve golfers are within three strokes of Weldon through one round, but the most notable may be University of Florida signee Sam Horsfield, the defending champion.
Horsfield, ranked No. 26 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, is three strokes back after shooting an even-par 72.
Notables at the tournament include Illinois senior Alex Burge (73), Georgia Tech senior Drew Czuchry (73), Florida commit Blake Dyer (73), former Stanford golfer Jim Liu (74) and Florida commit Kyler Tate (74).
In the senior division, Dennis Monahan leads after a round of 1-over 73. Reigning champ Tom Hyland is not far behind after an opening 76.
