Recap: Kevin Na, Jerry Kelly share Players lead

The big-name players were nowhere near the top of the leaderboard after two rounds of the Players Championship. Instead, it was Kevin Na and Jerry Kelly who led at 8 under after rounds of 69 and 65 on Friday, respectively.

Rory McIlroy’s second-round 1-under 71 left him tied for 13th, while Tiger Woods shot the same number and is tied for 61st. Perhaps the biggest surprise was a missed cut from Jordan Spieth after rounds of 75-72.

See how the second round unfolded Friday at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., and be sure to scroll all the way down for complete coverage:

• • •

Update No. 9: 5:18 p.m. EDT:

Rickie Fowler’s scorecard remains very clean today. A third birdie (at No. 11) has him at 6 under and in a big tie for second. Fowler has four holes left, and needs to get to 8 under to tie the lead.

• • •

Update No. 7: 4:13 p.m. EDT:

After such a fast start, Billy Horschel hasn’t been able to get much else going today. He bogeyed the sixth hole to make the turn 2 under on his round. He is still two off the lead.

• • •

Update No. 6: 3:45 p.m. EDT

What happened to Rory McIlroy? Well, so far it’s been an unspectacular day. McIlroy just bogeyed the sixth hole. At 2 under for the week, he’s tied for 38th.

• • •

Update No. 5: 3:34 p.m. EDT

A bogey at No. 6 derails Billy Horschel, if only slightly. He’s two shots off the lead now, and tied with three other players at 6 under – Troy Merritt, Branden Grace, David Hearn.

Update No. 1: 1:46 p.m. EDT

Tiger Woods just fired a 1-under 71 to finish 36 holes at even par. That puts him right on the projected cut line. Speaking of the cut line, Justin Thomas and Matt Kuchar are both 1 over for the tournament early in their second rounds. As for Justin Rose, he’s 1 over, but is finished for the day.

TIGER TRACKER

• • •

Hole No. 9: Par 5, 583 yards

Tiger needs birdie here as he’s still a shot below the projected cut line, which will likely not drop to 1 over unless the afternoon wave struggles.

Off the tee: No need to take driver out of the bag here and risk a bogey, and Tiger safely finds the fairway.

Second and third shots: Tiger lays up and will have a wedge into the green. Remember, he needs birdie here. Tiger’s third shot is a good one and he’ll have a birdie putt upcoming from inside of 10 feet.

On the green: Tiger’s birdie putt is about 9 feet long and he drains it. Big fist pump after that one.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1-under 71 (even for the tournament)

• • •

Hole No. 8: Par 3, 237 yards

That last par miss could prove very costly. Tiger is a shot below the projected cut line now and could need two birdies in his last two holes to make the cut if the afternoon wave plays well.

Off the tee: The tee ball is much better than Tiger’s shank here on Thursday as it finds the green about 30 feet away.

On the green: Two-putt par, although it was very close to being a birdie.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 17 (1 over for the tournament)

• • •

Hole No. 7: Par 4, 442 yards

Three holes left for Tiger, who might need one more birdie to make the weekend, although the projected cut still remains at even par.

Off the tee: Tiger’s drive goes right and into the trees.

Approach shot: Tiger doesn’t have a shot at the green and instead hits left of it.

Around the green: Tiger has a weird lie near a greenside bunker, but hits a good flop shot to inside of 10 feet.

On the green: Tiger misses the par save and settles for bogey.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 16 (1 over for the tournament)

• • •

Hole No. 6: Par 4, 393 yards

That last birdie provided some excitement, and Tiger is inside the cut line, again.

Off the tee: Tiger hits long iron into the fairway.

Approach shot: Tiger pulls another approach and just finds the left rough. He is only about 20 feet away, though.

Around the green: The chip nearly goes in before settling about 3 feet past.

On the green: Tiger converts the short par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under thru 15 (even for the tournament)

• • •

Hole No. 5: Par 4, 471 yards

That was a tough bogey from the fairway at the fourth hole, and Tiger again finds himself below the cut line.

Off the tee: Well, the tee balls have gotten better since the first hole. Tiger finds the fairway cut again.

Approach shot: Tiger hits his approach to about 25 feet.

On the green: Tiger gives this one a good roll, then lifts his putter in the air as it drops. Huge roar from the gallery after that birdie.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under thru 14 (even for the tournament)

• • •

Hole No. 4: Par 4, 384 yards

Tiger is now two-thirds of the way through his second round and sits right on the projected cut line at even par.

Off the tee: Tiger hits a nice ball into the fairway.

Approach shot: Tiger just clears the water with his approach and finds the fairway cut just shy of the green.

Around the green: Tiger opts to chip this one because of a mound that cuts into the green between Tiger’s ball and the hole. His ball hits the mound, kicks a little left and rolls to the back fringe. He then putts to inside of a few feet.

On the green: Bogey.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 13 (1 over for the tournament)

• • •

Hole No. 3: Par 3, 177 yards

Tiger needed that birdie and he moves back inside the projected cut line, although he’s seven shots back of leader Russell Henley.

Off the tee: Tiger finds the green and will have 25 feet left for birdie.

On the green: Two-putt par for Tiger.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under thru 12 (even for the tournament)

• • •

Hole No. 2: Par 5, 532 yards

That bogey drops Tiger back below the projected cut line and he’ll have to shake off that last drive quickly.

Off the tee: No 170-yard tee shot this time as Tiger hits it 300 yards. However, he also finds the right rough.

Second and third shots: Tiger muscles his second shot into the rough just left of the green. He then chips to about 3 feet.

On the green: Bounce-back birdie for Tiger.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under thru 11 (even for the tournament)

• • •

Hole No. 1: Par 4, 423 yards

Three birdies on the card through nine holes for Tiger, who has looked better as the round has progressed today.

Off the tee: After a back nine filled with several good tee balls, this one isn’t very good. It’s left and short.

Approach shot: Tiger is in the pine straw and has about 240 yards left to the hole after his 170-yard drive. His approach comes up short and in the right rough.

Around the green: Not the bets of pitches here, and he’ll have 12 feet left for par.

On the green: The par putt fails to find the hole and Tiger drops a shot.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 10 (1 over for the tournament)

• • •

Hole No. 18: Par 4, 462 yards

Tiger is gaining momentum, and if he can survive the 18th, there are some birdie opportunities on the front nine.

Off the tee: Another nice tee ball as Tiger hits 3-wood into the fairway.

Approach shot: Tiger pulls his approach left and finds the back-right bunker. He just missed the water.

Around the green: Tiger splashes out to inside of 5 feet.

On the green: Tiger caps his first nine with a par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under thru 9 (even for the tournament)

• • •

Hole No. 17: Par 3, 137 yards

Tiger is back in red numbers for the day, but now heads to the par-3 17th.

Off the tee: Safely on the green, Tiger gives himself about 35 feet left for birdie.

On the green: Tiger hits a good putt, but it doesn’t drop. Tap-in par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under thru 8 (even for the tournament)

• • •

Hole No. 16: Par 5, 523 yards

That last birdie brings Tiger back closer to the projected cut line.

Off the tee: Tiger seems to be finding a groove off the tee now and puts this one in the middle of the fairway.

Second shot: Tiger lands his second shot on the green and he’ll have a 30-footer upcoming for eagle.

On the green: Two-putt birdie.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under thru 7 (even for the tournament)

• • •

Hole No. 15: Par 4, 449 yards

The bunker shot at 14th was promising, but Tiger’s game as a whole has looked off.

On the green: Buckets. Tiger makes the birdie putt.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 6 (1 over for the tournament)

• • •

On the green: Tap-in par for Tiger.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 over thru 5 (2 over for the tournament)

• • •

Hole No. 13: Par 3, 181 yards

Tough bogey on that last hole, but there is still a lot of golf left today.

Off the tee: Tiger comes up way short of the green. Not a good tee ball.

Around the green: Still 20 yards away, Tiger pitches to about 6 feet.

On the green: The par save doesn’t drop and Tiger records a second straight bogey.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 over thru 4 (2 over for the tournament)

• • •

Hole No. 12: Par 4, 358 yards

Tiger is back inside the projected cut line after that birdie.

Off the tee: Tiger’s drive misses way left and finds the native area.

Approach shot: After taking relief because his ball was embedded in the pine straw, Tiger hits his approach shot through the green.

Around the green: Not the greatest of chips as this one ends up nearly 10 feet past.

On the green: Tiger can’t get the par save to drop and that’s a bogey.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 3 (1 over for the tournament)
