Maverick McNealy earns Barbasol Championship exemption

Stanford sophomore Maverick McNealy earned an exemption into the PGA Tour’s 2015 Barbasol Championship on Saturday, beating out the other four Jack Nicklaus Player of the Year Award recipients.

The five golfers earned the chance to play for a PGA Tour start after being named the top player in their respective collegiate divisions. McNealy, the Division I Player of the Year, outplayed Santiago Gomez of Nova Southeastern (Division II), Anthony Maccaglia of Oglethorpe (Division III), Sean Elliott of Dalton State (NAIA) and Kerry Sweeney of Eastern Florida State College (NJCAA) in a one-round event at Scioto Country Club in Columbus, Ohio.

McNealy teed it up at the 2014 U.S. Open, where he missed the cut after shooting 74-76. He’ll play for a return trip Monday in Columbus at sectional qualifying. The Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings’ top player is racking up PGA Tour starts, as he earned spots in next month’s Greenbrier Classic and the 2016 Memorial Tournament after winning the Nicklaus and Haskins awards, respectively.

All five winners will receive their awards from Jack Nicklaus in a ceremony at Muirfield Village Golf Club on Sunday.

The 2015 Barbasol Championship will be played July 16-19 at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Grand National in Opelika, Ala.

Here’s how things played out in Ohio:

• McNealy, 4-under 67

• Elliott, even-par 71

• Gomez, even-par 71

• Sweeney, 1-over 72

• Maccaglia, 9-over 80
