Recap: Z. Johnson wins British Open in playoff; Spieth comes up just short

The Grand Slam will have to wait another year.

Jordan Spieth bogeyed the 17th hole Monday at St. Andrews, then left a putt from the Valley of Sin at the 18th just left of the hole to miss out on a playoff at the British Open, which was won by Zach Johnson in a four-hole playoff.

Spieth carded a final-round 69, one that included a big birdie make from 50 feet at the 15th but also a four-putt double bogey at the eighth hole, and finished at 14 under, a shot back of Johnson, Marc Leishman and Louis Oosthuizen, who all qualified for the playoff.

Johnson played the four playoff holes in 1 under to win by a shot over Oosthuizen.

Here’s how it all unfolded Monday in Scotland:

• • •

Playoff Hole No. 4: Par 4, 356 yards

The final hole of the playoff is the par-4 18th. Johnson hits the fairway and has a wedge in on this short hole. His approach hits 20 feet past and spins back to about 12 feet. Pressure on Oosthuizen now. From the Valley of Sin, the South African hits his second shot to 10 feet. Johnson misses his birdie roll, meaning Oosthuizen will have a chance to extend the playoff. He misses. Zach Johnson wins.

• • •

Playoff Hole No. 3: Par 4, 495 yards

The playoff moves to the Road Hole, the par-4 17th. Johnson hits his approach shy of the bunker and has a tough third shot, which he hits long and nearly onto the road. He ends up with bogey while Oosthuizen also bogeys. Oosthuizen is even par and Johnson is 1 under. Leishman, who also bogeyed, is likely finished at 2 over.

• • •

Playoff Hole No. 2: Par 4, 452 yards

Leishman has some work to do as Oosthuizen and Johnson are each 1 under. Johnson hits it to about 20 feet at the par-4 second and makes the birdie putt to take a one-shot lead on Oosthuizen. Leishman is three shots back.

• • •

Playoff Hole No. 1: Par 4, 375 yards

The playoff will be contested among Louis Oosthuizen, Marc Leishman and Zach Johnson after Jordan Spieth and Jason Day come up a shot short. We’ll start things off at the par-4 opening hole. Johnson has the advantage after two shots and birdies. Oosthuizen also birdies but Leishman makes bogey to fall two back.

Hole No. 18: Par 4, 356 yards

  • Off the tee: Par is not an option here. Spieth needs birdie. One-handed finish on this drive and he is way left. He still can get this close but that was not a good drive.
  • Approach shot: Spieth walks this off and with a wedge in his hands spins this one off the front of the green. Not good and we’ve likely seen the end of Spieth’s Grand Slam run.
  • Around the green: Needs this to get into a playoff and it just misses left. The Grand Slam will have to wait another year.
