The U.S. Golf Association has announced its sectional qualifying sites for the 2016 U.S. Women’s Open Championship, to be played at CordeValle, in San Martin, Calif. Sectional qualifying consists of 36 holes, and the USGA will stage 25 such qualifiers, with 21 in the U.S. and four at international sites. The qualifiers will take place between May 9 and June 3, with players who make it out earning a U.S. Women’s Open spot.

“The U.S. Women’s Open is the pinnacle of women’s golf, and sectional qualifying is the first step in that journey,” said Stuart Francis, USGA Championship Committee chairman, in a release. “Our partners at state and regional golf associations, as well as several international organizations, play an important role in helping determine a worthy champion. We thank them for their efforts, and we look forward to the 71st playing of the U.S. Women’s Open.”

In 2015, the USGA accepted a record 1,873 entries for the event at Lancaster (Pa.) Country Club. That number was 171 more than the previous high set at the 2014 tournament played at Pinehurst’s No. 2 course.

A player is eligible for the U.S. Women’s Open if she has a Handicap Index that does not exceed 2.4, or if she is a professional.
