POWELL, Ohio – Amateur Zachary Bauchou of Forest, Va., took the early lead in the U.S. Open sectional qualifier here Monday, shooting 5-under 67 at Kinsale Golf & Fitness Club.
PGA Tour veteran Erik Compton was one shot back after shooting 68 at Kinsale.
Bauchou, 20, recently completed his freshman season at Oklahoma State, where he was honored as the Big 12 Conference newcomer of the year. Bauchou had three top-10 finishes in his first college season, including a victory at the ORU Shootout in April.
Ben Silverman is the leader in the clubhouse in the early going at Wedgewood Golf & Country Club with a 3-under 67.
There are 103 players in the 36-hole qualifier competing for 13 spots in the U.S. Open, to be played June 16-19 at Oakmont (Pa.) Country Club.
