Rickie Fowler's peers weigh in on Olympian's new haircut

CROMWELL, Conn. — Ah, Rickie Fowler, about that Olympic haircut … the lads back home aren’t quite sure what to think.

Justin Thomas simply shook his head. There aren’t many times when he’s speechless, but he was on this topic. Thomas, one of Fowler’s closest friends, did say he saw it for the first time when a photo of Fowler and Michael Phelps was tweeted.

Would he give Fowler some razzing? Thomas said no. Then he smiled. “He doesn’t care, anyway.”

Brooks Koepka rolled his eyes and promised, “you will never see me looking like that anytime soon.”

Trying to describe Fowler’s haircut, Koepka took his time and searched for the right words. In the end, he settled on this: “It looks like he’s missing a whole chunk of hair on one side.”

Fowler reportedly got the haircut at a shop in Jupiter, Fla., and some of his friends weren’t surprised at what he ended up with. Bubba Watson said Fowler had talked about “shaving one side” and Thomas conceded that he had heard his friend describe his plans.

No one, however, seemed willing to follow suit.

Keeping the Olympic theme, Watson said he felt connected to Friday’s opening ceremonies even though he was at the Travelers Championship here at TPC River Highlands. That’s because Watson wore his team-issued clothing — blue blazer over a red, white and blue shirt — when he attended a Travelers fund-raiser Friday night.

Watson confirmed that he watched the opening ceremonies, though only through the introduction of Chile. “Then I was tired; had to go to bed,” said Watson.
