Top 10 on Tour in Strokes Gained: Around-the-Green

One of the biggest differences between the pros on TV and amateur golfers is that guys on the PGA Tour know how to turn three into two. If they miss a green, instead of hitting from a bunker or the rough then needing two putts to get the ball in the hole, they tend to get it close and need just one putt.

For years, scrambling percentage was the best way to track which players were most adept at getting up-and-down after missing a green, but the stat has inherent flaws. For example, a good putter could be highly ranked in scrambling because he makes a lot of putts, even though he may not be an especially good chipper and pitcher.

A better stat is Strokes Gained: Around-the-Green. Made available for the first time this season, it tells how many shots per round a player gains or losses to the field on shots hit from within 30 yards of the green.

Below is a list of the top 10 players on the PGA Tour in Strokes Gained: Around-the-Green as of Monday, August 22, along with their gap, sand and lob wedges, plus their putter. The number in parenthesis next to the player’s name is how many strokes the player gains against the field per round in the category.
