Tiger Woods to debut new Nike golf shoe at Hero World Challenge

Tiger Woods returns to competitive golf this week in a new pair of kicks.

Woods will wear a prototype of the Nike TW ’17 golf shoe at the Hero World Challenge, which begins Thursday at Albany Golf Club in New Providence, Bahamas.

“This shoe is an absolutely integral part of my return to the sport I love and have missed so much,” said Woods, who worked on the shoe since July of 2015 with a Nike team led by Tobie Hatfield, Nike’s senior director of athlete innovation.

“Nike really got in the zone with me. I knew Tobie and I were on to something special back when I tried on the first prototype. I feel supreme support from this shoe, which leads to the utmost confidence when I step onto the course.”

Woods’ first meeting related to the shoe with the Nike team was at dinner during the 2015 Greenbrier Classic. Nike expressed that it “didn’t want to simply update (Woods’) current shoe.” Woods had worn the Nike Golf TW ’11 for years, and he wanted a shoe that complemented his new swing, which shifts his dominance from his left to right leg.

Nike delivered four options of an initial prototype to Woods’ home in Jupiter, Fla., in October 2015, around the time of his two back surgeries. Woods selected one shoe with which Nike could move forward, and in February he tested four variations of that selection on a simulator.

Nike gave the polished product to Woods in April at Sage Valley Golf Club in South Carolina, where Woods did a clinic with competitors of the Junior Invitational at Sage Valley.

The TW ’17 shoe is expected to become available at retail in spring of 2017.
