Tiger Woods took his role as Ryder Cup vice captain incredibly seriously, and got rave reviews from captain Davis Love III. Makes sense, Woods did help Patrick Reed turn in the Ryder Cup performance of his life.
Woods was a key contributor in terms of strategy and sorting out the Sunday singles order for the U.S. At nearly midnight Saturday at Hazeltine, Woods fired off a text to his captain: “I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep. There are no more pairings to make.”
So it’s not that surprising the U.S. team did something for him for all of this help. What exactly they did for Woods, though, was the surprise.
As the Forecaddie uncovered, the U.S. players donned matching t-shirts to honor Woods. But what was so special about these shirts? They were emblazoned with the phrase, “Make Tiger Great Again.”
Bravo. It’s tough to top that one.
Woods is back in competition at the Hero World Challenge, where he opened Thursday in 1-over 73. It seems it’s not just players on the U.S. Ryder Cup squad but former rivals as well that want to see Woods be great again.
“It’s good to see him back,” Ernie Els said. “Hopefully, he plays well … If he plays well, it would be great. He’ll have hope and start a good schedule. If it goes the other way, he’s behind the 8-ball again.”
After 18 holes, matters are looking up. But we’ll learn a lot more over the next few days.
