Expect the birdies to flow all week!

Round 1 of the CareerBuilder Challenge started Thursday in La Quinta, Calif., at three courses – PGA West’s Stadium, PGA West’s Nicklaus Tournament, and La Quinta Country Club, and birdies were not scarce. The leader after the round is at 8 under, with several one back.

We followed the action all day long in Palm Springs and bring you the highlights here:

We have a three-way tie for the lead now as Hudson Swafford and Patton Kizzire have caught Harold Varner III at 65.

Birdie putt from 10 feet at the last gives Mickelson a 4-under 68. He’s currently T-7. Strong start.

Harold Varner posts 7-under 65. He’s currently one ahead.

We have an NCAA champion near the top of the leaderboard! OK, yes, Mickelson, but we have the defending champion close to the lead.

Aaron Wise has made four straight birdies, and the former Oregon Duck is now just two back at 5 under through 12 holes at La Quinta.

Phil Mickelson birdies the eighth at La Quinta to move to 3 under already! He’s T-2 and two back.

Harold Varner III. 5 under through 7. Two-shot lead. Here’s his scorecard so far.

Phil Mickelson, the tournament ambassador, has his first birdie of the season. It came at La Quinta’s par-4 fourth hole. Mickelson (1 under) is two shots off the lead.

An eagle at La Quinta’s par-5 fifth hole give Harold Varner III the lead at 3 under.

Brandon Stone and Harold Varner III, both players who have wins worldwide since December, are among those tied for the lead at 1 under (Stone is playing the Stadium and Varner is on La Quinta CC). Phil Mickelson is still even par after pars on his first three holes at La Quinta.

It’s dark and a little chilly this morning as the weather is not what we all are accustomed to in Palm Springs. The heavy rain, however, should stay away until Friday. Tee times for Round 2 were moved up an hour because of an anticipated downpour Friday.
