Haskins Award Watch List: Feb. 10, 2017

Spring is here! And that means the return of the watch list for the 2017 Haskins Award Presented by Stifel.

The Haskins Award is given annually to the best college player, as voted by players, coaches and media. Haskins Award winners over the years include such notable future professionals as Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Luke Donald, Graeme McDowell and Hunter Mahan.

Here are my current top candidates for the 2017 Haskins Award:

• • •

1. Wyndham Clark

  • Year: Senior
  • School: Oregon
  • Golfweek/Sagarin Ranking: 2
  • Results: Won, Arizona Intercollegiate; second, Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational; T-3, Paintbrush Intercollegiate; T-6, East Lake Cup (stroke play); 2-0 in East Lake Cup match play
  • The buzz: The only knock of Clark during the fall was that he didn’t win a tournament. That changed in Arizona, as he opened the spring with a victory, his first with Oregon. He then followed that up with a decent T-10 in Hawaii.

• • •

2. Sam Burns

  • Year: Sophomore
  • School: LSU
  • Golfweek/Sagarin Ranking: 3
  • Results: Won, Western Refining College All-America Classic; T-1, David Toms Intercollegiate; second, Ka’anapali Collegiate Classic; T-6, Carpet Capital Collegiate; eighth, Maui Jim Intercollegiate; T-9, Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate
  • The buzz: Has yet to play this spring, but his win last November in El Paso was his second individual title of the season. He is 16-5-1 against Golfweek‘s top 25.

• • •

3. Maverick McNealy

  • Year: Senior
  • School: Stanford
  • Golfweek/Sagarin Ranking: 1
  • Results: Won, Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational; third, Gifford Collegiate (stroke play); fourth, Amer Ari Invitational; T-29, Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate
  • The buzz: He’s Golfweek‘s top-ranked individual and his fourth-place showing in Hawaii to open the spring helps his resume, but it’s hard to give him the edge over Clark and Burns right now.

• • •

4. Matthias Schwab

  • Year: Senior
  • School: Vanderbilt
  • Golfweek/Sagarin Ranking: 7
  • Results: T-2, Tavistock Collegiate Invitational; T-5, Carmel Cup; T-8, Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational; ninth, East Lake Cup (stroke play); 1-1 in East Lake Cup match play
  • The buzz: Has played the toughest schedule of any player in the top 10 (seventh) and finished ninth or better in all four events in the fall. Expect that consistency to continue when he begins play this spring.

• • •

5. Braden Thornberry

  • Year: Sophomore
  • School: Ole Miss
  • Golfweek/Sagarin Ranking: 11
  • Results: Won, Warrior Princeville Makai Intercollegiate; won, AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic; T-1, FAMC Intercollegiate at The Grove; T-4, The Invitational at the Ocean Course; T-10, Marquette Intercollegiate
  • The buzz: The NCAA’s leader in stroke average and co-leader in victories during the fall hasn’t begun spring competition yet, but he is coming off a big win at the Jones Cup last Sunday.

• • •

  • Will Zalatoris, Jr., Wake Forest (9)
