Reigning Masters champ Danny Willett is back in control at the Mayback Championship in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Willett shot a third-round 67 Saturday to move to 16 under for the tournament and claim a three-shot lead over David Lipsky.
Bernd Wiesberger was the overnight leader after making nine straight birdies en route to a second-round 63, but he couldn’t reclaim the magic Saturday. Wiesberger shot a 1-over 73 and is now five shots back at 11 under.
Willett made his first bogey of the tournament at the par-3 5th hole Saturday and recovered just fine, birdying holes No. 7 and 8 and finishing with birdies on 17 and 18.
France’s Alexander Levy is alone in third at 12 under after matching Willett’s 67 and just one back of Lipsky, who shot 68 Saturday.
“I played really well today,” Lipsky told Europeantour.com. “Didn’t hit it my best coming into the greens. I drove it well and scrambled well and I’m pretty happy with what I shot. I’ll just keep doing what I’m doing. I’m playing pretty well and giving myself opportunities. I’ll need to take advantage of the par 5s, that’s what I need to do. My last birdie before 18 was on 10 so I’m happy to have made that. Danny and I are friends and it’ll be neat out there competing.”
