Both divisions of the Dustin Johnson World Junior Championship ended in runaways, with impressive champions to boo.
Trent Phillips fired 1-under 71 Sunday at TPC Myrtle Beach in Murrells Inlet, S.C. to boost a one-shot lead to a six-shot victory. Phillips, of Inman, S.C., finished the week 5 under, with Teddy Tetak (closing 76) finishing second at 1 over. On the girls’ side, Skylar Thompson posted an eight-shot win, as a closing 5-over 77 in difficult conditions more than got the job done.
Thompson, of Buford, Ga., actually began the day two ahead, but a closing 85 by closest pursuer Emily Zhu opened things up for Thompson. Smith Knaffle placed second at 13 over, with Wint Phoo Aung third at 14 over. Zhu clocked in for a tie for fourth at 15 over.
Phillips, a 2018 Georgia commit, is ranked 22nd overall by Golfweek and fifth in his class. Thompson, a 2018 South Carolina commit, is 174th overall and 43rd in her class.
