Tiger Woods once sent a voicemail that touched Arnold Palmer's heart

ORLANDO, Fla. – Arnold Palmer shared a special relationship with many players, but his accord with Tiger Woods stuck out.

The pair combined for an enormous amount of influence in bringing interest to golf, so it was often fascinating to see them bond. There were plenty of chances for that viewing, too, considering Woods has won the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and got that extended winner’s greeting from Palmer off the 72nd green, eight times.

But on Wednesday, Alastair Johnston – the late Palmer’s former agent and now the chairman of Arnold Palmer Enterprises – shared an incredible behind-the-scenes look at how the Woods-Palmer relationship was as strong as ever in the final year for “The King.”

Take it away, Alastair…

“Last year, we had a guy here that has won eight Arnold Palmer Invitationals, Tiger Woods. Last year he couldn’t come when he planned on coming. And he left a voicemail for Arnold Palmer that we still have on record that wasn’t just an explanation of why he couldn’t be here, but he took it upon himself to talk about Arnold Palmer, to Arnold Palmer, in his voicemail. It was one of the most meaningful monologues I’ve ever heard from anybody, but it represented Tiger’s view on Arnold Palmer and what he has done for him, the game of golf, and for a universe at large.”

That’s pretty special coming from a guy who has won 14 majors. It’s not only that, either: Palmer was deeply moved by the voicemail. You might get goosebumps reading this.

“That (message from Tiger) was something that I can tell you that Arnold listened to and listened to again and again. And by the way, it was a long message, and I can tell you this, that what Tiger said to Arnold at that point in time in paying tribute to him, was probably more meaningful to Arnold than the eight victories he won here.”

It would be nice to know what exactly Woods said, but the fact he sent this message and got this reaction from Palmer is pretty special.
