ORLANDO – Arnie would … probably not do this.
We’re talking about Cody Gribble nudging an 8-foot-long alligator into the water Thursday at Bay Hill’s sixth hole. Gribble, a 5-foot-9 Texan from Dallas, wasn’t scared, either.
“I didn’t even realize it was on video,” said Gribble, who shot 5-over 77 in Round 1 of the Arnold Palmer Invitational. “Gator looked like he needed some exercise, I don’t know. He was sitting right there in the way and I guess I was struggling today, I wanted to get some adrenaline going somehow.”
Asked if he’d done something like that before, Gribble nodded. He’s been up close and personal with a few gators in his lifetime. (He has a pair of gator-skin boots, too.)
“It’s probably frowned upon but I wasn’t too worried about it at the time,” Gribble said. “It’s like a jolt, it’s quick, you know, they’re not going to catch you a couple steps down.”
Has he ever had one turn around on him before, though? “Oh yeah, but they haven’t got me.”
But if you think Gribble is crazy for getting that close to the large reptile, Gribble says, “You should meet my father, Bill Gribble.”
