Karl Vilips, 2020's top-ranked junior golfer, commits to Stanford

Karl Vilips, the top-ranked junior golfer in the Class of 2020, verbally committed to Stanford on Friday.

The 15-year-old from Australia is Stanford’s first 2020 commitment, although the Cardinal women’s team received a verbal from top-ranked 2020 girl, Rachel Heck, last month.

Vilips, as freshman at Saddlebrook Prep in Wesley Chapel, Fla., is ranked 29th overall by Golfweek, 19th in the AJGA Polo Golf Junior Rankings and 465th in the World Amateur Golf Ranking.

He won the Junior Orange Bowl last December and has won the IMG Academy Junior World Championships four times. He’s the youngest multiple open tournament winner in AJGA history and played on his first Wyndham Cup team last year. He qualified for the U.S. Amateur and Western Amateur in 2016, and this year he qualified for the Junior Invitational at Sage Valley in April.

He is currently in line to represent the world at the inaugural Junior Presidents Cup this fall.

His swing instructor? None other than Jordan Spieth’s coach, Cameron McCormick, who also coaches several top amateur golfers, including top-ranked junior Noah Goodwin.
