Collin Morikawa has put his name in the mix for the 2017 Haskins Award presented by Stifel.
The Cal sophomore won his second straight individual title of the season Sunday at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational, an event that was dominated on the team side by champion and host Arizona State. Morikawa posted a 13-under 200 that was capped by a 2-under 69 at Karsten Golf Course in Tempe. He won by a shot over UNLV’s Shintaro Ban and Arizona State’s Chun An Yu.
Morikawa, who was credited with a co-victory two weeks ago at the Southern Highlands Collegiate, has finished worse than T-9 just once in eight starts this season.
The Sun Devils shot 41-under 811 as a team and won by 20 shots over runner-up UNLV. Even ASU’s B team finished third, ahead of teams like Washington (T-4), Iowa State (sixth) and Cal (eighth).
Yu, Blake Wagoner (fourth), Jared du Toit (fifth) and Tobias Eden (10th) all finished in the top 10 playing for the Sun Devils’ A team. Jino Sohn, a member of the B team, finished T-6.
