WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play groups revealed

The groups are set for the 2017 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play.

The 64-player field was separated randomly into 16 four-man groups, with each group containing one of the top 16 seeds, one player from seeds 17-32, one player from 33-48 and one player from 49-64.

Looking for the group of death? There are some good candidates.

Top seed Dustin Johnson, the 2016 U.S. Open winner, is grouped with three fellow major champions: Jimmy Walker (2016 PGA), Martin Kaymer (2010 PGA, 2014 U.S. Open) and Webb Simpson (2012 U.S. Open). Kaymer is in good form, as is Walker. Simpson hasn’t had a great season so far, but did impress in Phoenix, where he was runner-up to Hideki Matsuyama.

Rory McIlroy, the second seed, has a tough group, as well. He drew Emiliano Grillo, who played well at Bay Hill; Gary Woodland, who McIlroy beat in the 2015 Match Play final; and Soren Kjeldsen, who is starting to turn his year around.

Jason Day, the defending Match Play champ, is joined in his group by Marc Leishman, last week’s winner at Arnie’s Place; Lee Westwood, who has played more WGCs than anyone in the field; and Pat Perez, who is having a resurgent season that has already included a victory.

Sergio Garcia is grouped with fellow Spaniard Jon Rahm. Kevin Chappell and Shane Lowry round out that group.

Phil Mickelson gets fellow Ryder Cupper J.B. Holmes, and rising stars Daniel Berger and Si Woo Kim. Kim has struggled this season with MCs and WDs, but he did make the weekend at Bay Hill.

Group-stage matches will take place Wednesday-Friday with players playing each player in their group once. The player in each group with the best record after three matches moves on to the knockout stage, which begins Saturday.
