VIDEO: Jordan Spieth hits hickory club

Want to make golf harder? Try play with the clubs of yesteryear.

In a video the PGA Tour posted Wednesday, Jordan Spieth did just that.

Spieth tried his hand at using hickory-shafted clubs – the sticks wielded by golfers in the early 1900s – and actually went the whole nine yards, adopting the attire of the time, as well as using the golf ball of the era (gutta percha) and teeing the ball up on a lump of sand (tees had not been invented yet).

He may be 23 years old, but Spieth certainly isn’t ignorant to history. The two-time major champion went retro here for a promotion for the movie Tommy’s Honour, a film chronicling the story of Old Tom Morris and Young Tom Morris. The movie’s scheduled U.S. theatrical debut is April 14.

As Spieth learned, playing golf this way presents its challenges. Take a look.
