Spring preview 2018: Mountain West

As the college golf season gets ready to resume, Golfweek will preview each automatic-qualifier conference in Division I, offering picks to win, midseason All-Conference teams and more.

All of our conference previews will reside here.

Next up: Mountain West

Conference championship: April 20-22, Gold Mountain GC, Bremerton, Wash.

Defending champion: UNLV

Team rankings: Colorado State (19), San Diego State (42), UNLV (46), Wyoming (62), Nevada (69), Boise State (73), New Mexico (76), Fresno State (109), San Jose State (125), Utah State (136), Air Force (194)

Midseason All-Conference team: Shintaro Ban, UNLV (18); P.J. Samiere, San Diego State (75); Grant Booth, Nevada (88); John Murdock, Wyoming (102); Brian Humphreys, Boise State (108)

What to expect: The Rams were one of the surprises in all of college golf this fall, garnering a top-20 ranking despite not finishing in the top 60 in any of the previous five seasons. They have nobody on the All-Conference team, but that’s misleading, as four of their players are ranked in the top 200 nationally. Can the Rams prevent a UNLV three-peat? Certainly, especially as the Rebels are without star John Oda, who left a year early to turn pro. But UNLV still retains that winning experience, and Shintaro Ban has stepped up with Oda gone. This will be an intriguing one – not only to see if Colorado State can capitalize on an up-start season, but also San Diego State is always intriguing – but right now I still give an edge to a Rebels three-peat.

Pick to win: UNLV

Conference championship: April 16-18, Mission Hills CC, Rancho Mirage, Calif.

Defending champion: UNLV

Team rankings: UNLV (38), San Diego State (49), San Jose State (55), New Mexico (64), Fresno State (72), Colorado State (100), Wyoming (142), Nevada (147), Boise State (180)

Midseason All-Conference team: Elizabeth Prior, UNLV (31); Ingrid Gutierrez, New Mexico (81); Polly Mack, UNLV (91); Mimi Ho, Fresno State (98); Alexandra Cooper, San Jose State (190)

What to expect: UNLV is also the two-time defending champion on this side. The Rebels boast the best player and best squad (per the rankings) in 2017-18, too. There are certainly plenty of challengers, but the favorite is clear.

Pick to win: UNLV
