Tiger Tracker: Tiger Woods posts 4-under 67 to sit within 1 of lead

Tiger Woods fired an electric 4-under 67 on Saturday at the Valspar Championship to move within one heading into the final day.

We tracked Woods’ third round shot by shot. Look back on what you may’ve missed…

Hole No. 18: Par 4, 424 yards

  • OFF THE TEE (5:30 p.m. ET): Tiger goes 2-iron on this downwind hole, and that is a good one down the right side of the fairway. Conners is in trouble at No. 17. So if Tiger can birdie here, he might feasibly have the solo 54-hole lead.
  • APPROACH SHOT (5:34 p.m. ET): Tiger from 170 yards, and that’s textbook. Another pin tucked left, and he puts this ball about 25-30 feet right of the cup. Tiger needs birdie to be in the final group probably. Regardless, it looks like he’s getting in at 8 under at worst.
  • ON THE GREEN (5:44 p.m. ET): Tiger ran the first putt by more than we like, but it is a par in the end. That’s a 4-under 67. What a round. Tiger will likely be in the penultimate group Sunday and just one shot back.

  • TIGER ON THE DAY: 4-under 67 (-8 overall, T-2)

Hole No. 17: Par 3, 215 yards

  • OFF THE TEE (5:22 p.m. ET): Tiger goes 7-iron and he plays it safe. That pin is tucked right, so Tiger went about 20 feet left of it, and he executes perfectly. That ball lands 25 feet left of the hole and sticks there. This should be a pretty simple par, outside chance at birdie.
  • ON THE GREEN (5:26 p.m. ET): That was a tough read. Tiger laughs to himself after that 27-footer as the ball rolls by on the left. But it’s an easy par. And with Conners bogeying No. 16, Woods is one back.
  • TIGER ON THE DAY: 4 under thru 17 (-8 overall, T-2)

Hole No. 16: Par 4, 438 yards

  • OFF THE TEE (5:06 p.m. ET): This is the last true disaster hole on the course with water right, but Tiger didn’t seem to notice. He hits 3-wood, it lands on left edge of fairway and kicks right. A great drive, and he’s in wonderful position.
  • APPROACH SHOT (5:11 p.m. ET): This one from 161 yards … a solid shot. That pin was tucked left and you can’t miss left. So he plays one smartly about 40 feet right and long of the hole. So a long-ish birdie putt upcoming, but he’ll look to two-putt for par.
  • ON THE GREEN (5:15 p.m. ET): That was not an easy two-putt, but Tiger got it. His first putt came up about 4 feet short and he hit
  • TIGER ON THE DAY: 4 under thru 16 (-8 overall, T-2)

Hole No. 15: Par 3, 162 yards

  • OFF THE TEE (4:56 p.m. ET): Tiger takes out 8-iron and does not back off. This one goes right over the flag, and lands some 10 feet past the cup. It trickles a little, but Tiger is inside 15 feet for birdie.
  • ON THE GREEN (4:59 p.m. ET): Tiger didn’t read that one right. It was left the entire way. But he had perfect speed, so it’s an easy tap-in. No harm done.
  • TIGER ON THE DAY: 4 under thru 15 (-8 overall, T-2)

Hole No. 14: Par 5, 577 yards

  • OFF THE TEE (4:40 p.m. ET): Pounded. Tiger starts this driver left, lands the ball in the left side of the fairway and it trundles some 30 more yards down the middle. That is way down there in the fairway. Tiger’s swing speed on that drive: 129 mph. Wow.
  • APPROACH SHOT (4:45 p.m. ET): From 232 yards with a 4-iron … he was walking after it and it’s a solid strike. Tiger actually got unlucky. That hit the front edge of the green and stuck, rather than rolling out. But he’ll have about 40 feet for eagle. At the very least, a bounceback birdie is likely.
  • ON THE GREEN (4:50 p.m. ET): This was actually closer to 50 feet, but Tiger handles that brilliantly. Almost holed it, actually. The ball misses right, though, and trickles a couple feet by. But he cleans up for birdie. Two back again.
  • TIGER ON THE DAY: 4 under thru 14 (-8 overall, T-2)

Hole No. 13: Par 3, 178 yards

  • OFF THE TEE (4:25 p.m. ET): That’s not what we wanted to see. Tiger goes long and left with a 7-iron. That’s a shallow green, too, so this is a 10 out of 10 on difficulty for a short-game shot upcoming.
  • AROUND THE GREEN (4:29 p.m. ET): That was a heart-pounder right there. Tiger took a full swing at that and tried to play a huge flop. If he caught too much ball, he was in the water. He catches it a touch fat instead and ends up in the bunker. But that’s not a bad miss. He hits a beauty out of the sand and cozies that within a few feet. It should be a bogey. Not ideal, but this could’ve been a total disaster.
  • ON THE GREEN (4:33 p.m. ET): Tiger taps in for bogey. But with Conners birdieing No. 12, Woods is now three back.

  • TIGER ON THE DAY: 3 under thru 13 (-7 overall, T-3)

Hole No. 12: Par 4, 363 yards

  • OFF THE TEE (4:10 p.m. ET): Tiger goes iron on this short par 4 and that’s great. Just a few yards right of center. Position A here.
  • APPROACH SHOT (4:16 p.m. ET): This was expertly done by TW. From 143 yards, he lands that 15 feet beyond the flag and it rolls to the back fringe. But Tiger knew there was a slope there, and the ball comes off the fringe and trickles back inside 10 feet of the cup. Another great birdie look upcoming.
  • ON THE GREEN (4:19 p.m. ET): That was mean. Tiger hit a good putt, but the ball catches the left lip and rims out. He’s now one back after Conners birdies No. 11.
  • TIGER ON THE DAY: 4 under thru 12 (-8 overall, second)

Hole No. 11: Par 5, 550 yards

  • OFF THE TEE (3:57 p.m. ET): Tiger takes less than driver here and it goes right. The ball actually hits a tree and kicks left. But the ball is in the rough. This will be a lay up.
  • SECOND SHOT (4:01 p.m. ET): Tiger indeed lays up with no issue. He gets this one down the left-center of the fairway. He’ll have a wedge third.
  • THIRD SHOT (4:04 p.m. ET): That. Is. Tasty. Tiger’s sand wedge from 106 yards lands 5 feet left of the hole and spins under it. Maybe 5 feet for birdie. That is what’s left for the solo lead. Breathe, people, breathe.
  • ON THE GREEN (4:08 p.m. ET): Nope. Tiger doesn’t give that 7-footer enough speed, and it dies to the right. We can relax for a second. That putt would’ve given Tiger the outright lead. But he’s still T-1 after a par.
  • TIGER ON THE DAY: 4 under thru 11 (-8 overall, T-1)

Hole No. 10: Par 4, 441 yards

  • OFF THE TEE (3:42 p.m. ET): Tiger takes iron off the tee and that one was pretty. Right down the fairway with lovely traj.
  • APPROACH SHOT (3:47 p.m. ET): A nice solid one here. Tiger puts this one from 162 yards about 20 feet right of the hole. With Conners birdieing No. 9, Tiger will need that to move back into a share of the lead.
  • ON THE GREEN (3:54 p.m. ET): This man is ridiculous. Oh yeah, he drained it. Uh-huh, what’s that, Corey? You made birdie? I’ll just make one too. Another birdie, and Tiger is tied for the lead again.

  • TIGER ON THE DAY: 4 under thru 10 (-8 overall, T-1)

Hole No. 9: Par 4, 422 yards

  • OFF THE TEE (3:31 p.m. ET): The driver in hand, Tiger goes well left. He played a fade and that one was a double-cross. This one will just depend on his path and if he’s obstructed. We’ll see.
  • APPROACH SHOT (3:37 p.m. ET): OK, Tiger did have an angle at the green here. But from 118 yards, while he makes good contact, he can’t stop it. The ball lands 20 feet below the pin but bounds over the green. He will have a very tricky chip coming from the rough beyond the green.
  • AROUND THE GREEN (3:40 p.m. ET): Did that really just happen? SERIOUSLY?? That’s some Tiger magic of old. He plays a deft that lands 20 feet short of the cup and trickles right in FOR A BIRDIE. And … HE’S NOW TIED FOR THE LEAD!! Unbelievable.

  • TIGER ON THE DAY: 3 under thru 9 (-7 overall, T-1)

Hole No. 8: Par 3, 191 yards

  • OFF THE TEE (3:20 p.m. ET): With a 6-iron, Tiger goes a bit right and long of the flag on this one but that’ll be good. It looks like he left himself about 30 feet for birdie on this tough par 3. A nice tee shot, but he’ll likely just be looking for a two-putt here.
  • ON THE GREEN (3:29 p.m. ET): Don’t think Tiger read that one right from 28 feet. The ball was always right and sneaks maybe 3.5 feet by the cup. Don’t worry, though, he cleans up for par. Oh, and he’s just one back now after Conners bogeys again to drop to 7 under.
  • TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 under thru 8 (-6 overall, T-2)

Hole No. 7: Par 4, 417 yards

  • OFF THE TEE (3:06 p.m. ET): Ooh the twirl. That was an exaggerated twirl out to the side, too. It’s deserved, as Tiger gets this iron off the tee to go perfectly down the left side of the fairway. We’re in business.
  • APPROACH SHOT (3:11 p.m. ET): This was a smart shot from TW. He goes at this left pin but keeps it short. The ball finishes 15-20 feet short of the hole. A solid birdie look upcoming after that approach from 153 yards.
  • ON THE GREEN (3:17 p.m. ET): That one from 18 feet started on a solid line but wiggled to the left. A simple tap-in par is nothing to feel bad about, though. Tiger is also just two back now after Corey Conners bogeyed to fall to 8 under.
  • TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 under thru 7 (-6 overall, T-2)

Hole No. 6: Par 4, 459 yards

  • OFF THE TEE (2:53 p.m. ET): Another iron off the tee and another miss that Tiger hates immediately. This one went left and appeared to be well in the rough over there. Not great.
  • APPROACH SHOT (3 p.m. ET): Tiger had over 200 yards in from well left of the fairway, but he did have a shot at the green. This one is really good from that spot, but it does come up a bit short of the green. He’ll need some more short-game stuff to come away with par.
  • AROUND THE GREEN (3:02 p.m. ET): Oh my! We almost passed out. Tiger goes for a low runner from 30 yards away and it rolls and rolls right at the cup and looks like it’s going in until it curls off right at the last second. A great par, but almost an incredible birdie.
  • ON THE GREEN (3:05 p.m. ET): Another simple tap-in, this time for par. He remains three back at 6 under overall.
  • TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 under thru 6 (-6 overall, T-2)

Hole No. 5: Par 5, 611 yards

  • OFF THE TEE (2:37 p.m. ET): This hole is a monster into the wind today, but Tiger LAUNCHES a driver down there. A freaking beauty down the right-center of the fairway. That’s a long one. Once we know the distance, we can tell you whether he can go for this one in two.
  • APPROACH SHOT (2:44 p.m. ET): That was a 321-yard drive from TW. He had 283 yards up a hill and a little into the wind. He launches a 3-wood and it ends up just right of the green in the rough pin high. He’ll have a 25-foot chip for eagle. If the lie is fine, he’s in really good shape here.

  • AROUND THE GREEN (2:48 p.m. ET): Tiger chops at this one, and oh that was pretty. Ball lands maybe 2 feet before the cup, checks up quickly and just misses the hole on the left side. It rolls maybe 18 inches past. That’ll be a tap-in birdie!
  • ON THE GREEN (2:49 p.m. ET): Yep, a simple 4. And now Tiger is within three again and T-2!

  • TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 under thru 5 (-6 overall, T-2)

Hole No. 4: Par 3, 174 yards

  • OFF THE TEE (2:28 p.m. ET): With an 8-iron, Tiger had this one going just left of the hole … but he misjudged the distance. This one comes up short in the rough. Ball is sitting up a little but could be a tricky up and down.
  • AROUND THE GREEN (2:32 p.m. ET): TW almost holed that. The ball went by on the right side by inches and ran a few feet past. He’ll have a short par putt upcoming, but it’s no gimme.
  • ON THE GREEN (2:34 p.m. ET): A slippery 4-footer down the hill that Tiger juuuust sneaks in for par. Oh man, that was dicey. It was on the left side the whole way but just caught the left edge and curled in. Tiger will take it, but he is three back after another Conners birdie.
  • TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under thru 4 (-5 overall, T-3)

Hole No. 3: Par 4, 437 yards

  • OFF THE TEE (2:14 p.m. ET): Tiger does not look comfortable off the tee so far. He goes iron off the tee and it lands on right edge of fairway and then scurries into the primary rough.
  • APPROACH SHOT (2:19 p.m. ET): A nice recovery from TW. That had a pure sound to it as the ball launched out of a meh lie, and the ball lands about 30 feet right and short of the hole and dribbles forward. Maybe 25 feet left for birdie. Excellent.
  • ON THE GREEN (2:24 p.m. ET): This one from 21 feet … BOOM. Wow that was pretty. A right-to-left slider that he had trickle in the left side perfectly. There’s an early jolt!

  • TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under thru 3 (-5 overall, T-3)

Hole No. 2: Par 4, 411 yards

  • OFF THE TEE (2 p.m. ET): He goes iron off the tee here, and this one is just fine. It goes down the right-center of the fairway. He’ll be a bit of a ways back, but he’s in the short grass.
  • APPROACH SHOT (2:04 p.m. ET): That was … not ideal. From 174 yards, Tiger flails this one right and hates it immediately. The ball lands in the front rough and does bounce out onto the right edge of the green. But with the pin all the way left, Tiger has maybe 70 feet for birdie left.
  • ON THE GREEN (2:10 p.m. ET): That was a 75-footer for Tiger and his lag is just OK, as he leaves himself a 5-foot comebacker. But he drains that for a clutch, key par early. he walked it in, too. He’s now three back, though, after Conners opens with birdie.
  • TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 2 (-4 overall, T-7)

Hole No. 1: Par 5, 560 yards

  • OFF THE TEE (1:45 p.m. ET): He goes 3-wood off the tee and it’s a big pull. The ball heads toward the trees and appears to end up in some pinestraw. He should be fine, but it’s likely a lay up from there.
  • APPROACH SHOT (1:52 p.m. ET): Tiger’s ball ended up on some leaves on top of hardpan with an angle to the green. From 248 yards out downwind, TW takes iron and gets this one to the front right greenside bunker. So he’ll have about a 20-yard shot from the sand. Up and down would mean opening birdie.
  • AROUND THE GREEN (1:55 p.m. ET): A pretty good effort on that long bunker shot. Looked more like 30 yards, but he gets it right on line and about 8 feet short. So a good look for birdie upcoming.
  • ON THE GREEN (1:58 p.m. ET): From 8.5 feet …  Nope. That one wasn’t high enough. The ball curls left at the end and misses on that side. An opening par, but Tiger will be disappointed with that.

  • TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 1 (-4 overall, T-4)

Yep, he’s here! Tiger is on the range now. Remember, his tee time is 1:45 p.m. ET. So we’re about 35 minutes away.

We’ll update you when he’s out there. For now, enjoy his Round 2 highlights here:

Valspar Championship Tracker

UPDATE No. 6 (6:15 p.m. ET): Conners ends the day with a par. That puts him in at 9 under and the solo 54-hole leader.

He’ll start the final round one clear of Tiger Woods, Justin Rose and Brandt Snedeker. Sam Burns is three back, as is Patrick Reed.

UPDATE No. 5 (5:14 p.m. ET): Conners leads by two at 10 under. Tiger Woods and Paul Casey are two back.

UPDATE No. 4 (2:42 p.m. ET): Corey Conners birdies Nos. 1, 3 and 4 to move to 9 under. He’s now three clear of the field. Not good news for TW fans, but it’s early in the round.

UPDATE No. 3 (2:22 p.m. ET): Sam Burns continues his run. He got into this field after an impressive top 10 at Honda. He’s now solo second and one back this week. That’s thanks to a 4-under 32 that has pushed him to 6 under.

Burns would need a finish second or just barely below this week to earn enough for special temporary membership on the PGA Tour. That status would grant him unlimited sponsor exemptions this season. If he wins, of course that’s a two-year PGA Tour exemption.

UPDATE No. 2 (2:03 p.m. ET): Bob Estes, 52, birdies three of his first four and he’s now just one back at 5 under!

UPDATE No. 1 (1:13 p.m. ET): Adam Scott fires a 5-under 66 to move to 4 under and T-2. So the scores are out there. By day’s end, though, he may be significantly more than two back.
