Ciganda, Nordqvist in British final

ALWOODLEY, England – Carlota Ciganda is coming to a college near you, maybe with the 2007 Ladies British Amateur Championship on her resume.

The precocious 17-year-old lived up to her top seeding when she putted her way to the final of the Ladies’ British Amateur Championship. This year’s final is a repeat of the Spain versus Sweden climax that took place at Royal County Down last year, with one of the protagonists from that showdown making a repeat appearance.

The Spaniard faces Sweden’s Anna Nordqvist (pictured) in the 18-hole shootout. Nordqvist lost to Spain’s Belen Mozo at County Down last year, and the 20-year-old Swede will need to have her short stick working if she is to go one step further and take the trophy this year.

Ciganda plays to a handicap of plus-5. It’s easy to see why. She hits the ball long, wields her wedges the way fine artists use their brushes, and holes just about everything she looks at.

Putting was certainly the key to her quarterfinal and semifinal victories around the 6,198-yard Alwoodley layout.

The Spaniard wielded the shortest club in her bag to good effect in her quarterfinal match against 19-year-old Scot Michelle Thomson. That contest proved to be her toughest test.

The Spaniard never had come close to seeing the last three holes in her previous matches, winning, 6 and 4, 5 and 4, and 4 and 3, but Thomson gave her a bit of scare.

The plucky Scot from McDonald Ellon Golf Club near Aberdeen in Northeastern Scotland might have won the match if she had matched Ciganda’s putting stroke. The Scot three putted both the par-3 7th and 11th holes, then watched as Ciganda rolled in a 45-foot par putt on the 13th to keep her 2-up lead.

Thomson did well to battle back by winning the next two holes, but a poor drive at the 17th cost her. She lost that hole and conceded the last to end a brave fight.

Ciganda continued her putting prowess in the afternoon when she faced Sweden’s Caroline Westrup, a sophomore at Florida State.

The Seminole player found herself 2 down after two when Ciganda holed birdie putts of nine and 15 feet respectively. Ironically, the only hole Ciganda lost came when she three putted the par-5 3rd from 30 feet. After that, she didn’t really look like missing many putts.

She restored her lead to 2 up when she got up and down from left of the ninth green. She then won three holes on the bounce by holing from nine feet at 12 for birdie, 12 feet at 13 for par, and then rolling in a 25-foot birdie putt at the 155-yard par-3 14th hole for birdie.

“My putting has been my strong point this week,” she said. “I’m used to faster greens but these are so true that I’ve been able to putt very well.”

Nordqvist reached the final with a 3-and-2 quarterfinal victory over Scotland’s Krystle Caithness, and a 4-and-2 win over England’s Rachel Bell. The Swede won five consecutive holes from the third against Bell and cruised after that. She closed out the match when she holed a 21-foot eagle putt at the 16th hole.

Nordqvist, No. 2 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, was named Freshman of the Year and a first-team All-American at Arizona State.

“I’m a much better player than I was at this time last year,” she said. “Hopefully I can do better this year. I’ve got nothing to lose.

“I’ve worked hard on my game. I’ve had a chance to play a lot of tough courses in America, and I’ve learned to be very competitive, learned to shoot under par. Plus my short game is now so much better.”

It will need to be if she is to beat Ciganda.

The pair have only ever met once before in head to head play. That was in the 2004 British Girls’ Championship. When Nordqvist got the upper hand.

The two are fairly good friends from playing on Junior Solheim Cup teams. They could soon be teammates.

Ciganda hails from Pamplona, Spain, and her main prerequisite for college golf is warm weather. “I’ve been looking at Arizona, Arizona State and USC. I need to go somewhere warm because I don’t like the cold weather.”

The Sun Devils could become a formidable force in 2008 if they can lure the talented Spaniard to play alongside Nordqvist.

The smart money is on Ciganda to become 2007 Ladies British Amateur champion, although either player will be worthy of the title.
