Horsey hops to lead at British Amateur

LYTHAM ST. ANNES, England – David Horsey took a step closer to his Walker Cup dream when he tied the course record of 64 around Royal Lytham & St. Annes to lead the opening round of British Amateur Championship qualifying.

Horsey, from Manchester, England, negotiated the 6,882-yard, par-71 Lytham layout with scores of 33 for the front nine and 31 for the back. The 22-year-old opened his round with a bogey on the par-3 first, but it was his only blemish.

Horsey made birdies at the sixth, seventh, and ninth holes, eagled the par-5 11th, and finished with birdies at 15, 17 and 18 to equal the course record set by Tom Lehman when he won the 1996 Open Championship, and former Baylor player Jamie McLeary. McLeary fired a 64 during the 2004 Lytham Trophy.

“I played pretty well,” Horsey said with a touch of understatement. “I hit it pretty strong, and kept it down the middle.”

Horsey is already a member of the Great Britain & Ireland Walker Cup practice squad. He strengthened his chances for the final team earlier this season when he won the West of England Championship at Saunton Sands. He also finished fourth in the Brabazon Trophy.

The England international played the course early in the day when the wind was slightly stronger than for the afternoon players.

“I had a lot of cross winds today, but I like playing in the wind because half the field can play in the wind and the other half can’t, so it rules out half the field and increases your chances.”

The GB & I Walker Cup team will be selected in early August, after the Scottish, English and Welsh Amateur Championships. The buzz is that seven of the ten spots have already been filled, with three spots up for grabs. Horsey wants one of those spots.

“The Walker Cup is the main goal this season,” he said. “If I make it, I will turn pro afterwards. If not then I’ll turn before. But that’s my main goal. I want to be on the team.”

Scotland’s Kevin McAlpine is another who has set his sights on a Walker Cup place. He also did his chances the power of good when he came within a stroke of Horsey’s 64. His 25-foot birdie putt at the last just missed and he had to settle for a 6-under 65 .

McAlpine, a former Colorado State player, won the Scottish Stroke Play Championship at Dornoch three weeks ago, and has carried that form into this tournament.

“I’ve been playing well this season,” McAlpine said. “Last year I seemed to be hitting my bad shots into the wrong places. This season my misses haven’t been as bad.”

McAlpine’s round was helped by four consecutive birdies from the 13th, including a 45-foot chip in for a birdie three at the tough 14th.

The lowest score at St. Annes Old Links came from former professional Craig Evans of Wales, and 19-year-old local player David Corsby, who fired 7-under-par 65s.

Former University of Minnesota player Niall Turner fired a 6-under-par 66 at St. Annes Old Links. Turner eagled the par-5, 18th hole when he hit his approach shot to 1 foot.

Highly-rated Australian player Rohan Blizzard also fired a 66. The 23-year-old may hail from Sydney, but he feels right at home on traditional British golf courses. “I love it over here, just love links golf,” he said.

England’s Ben Parker, also a GB & I Walker Cup practice squad member, returned a 66.

Scoring was low on the opening day, with a low cut predicted. Two-time British Amateur champion Gary Wolstenholme needs to go low in round two after a 2-over-par 73 at Lytham. Veteran Walker Cup player Nigel Edwards was two shots worse on 75 at St. Annes.

Irish sensation Rory McIlroy returned a 69 at St. Annes, while England international Jamie Moul scored 68 at Lytham.
