Frank Lickliter II (pictured) and Brendon de Jonge scorched the Panther Lake layout – traditionally the harder of the two Orange County National courses – with opening-round 62s. Lickliter finished 139th in earnings this year and already has limited status on Tour in 2008. He birdied six of his first seven holes and closed his bogey-free round with birdie at the par-5 18th. De Jonge, a Tour rookie in 2007 who finished just outside the top 150 in earnings, had a pair of eagles on his final nine (Nos. 2 and 7) for his 62.

Moving toward the head of the class: Twenty-seven players are inside the top-25 bubble one lap into the 108-hole odyssey, but none more entertaining than Tommy “Two Gloves” Gainey. Gainey, making his first trip to the final stage, is tied for seventh at 5-under 67. Just ahead of Gainey are a pair of promising Australians, David Lutterus and Brett Rumford, at 6 under.

Possible drop-outs: The bromide goes that you can’t win Q-School in Round 1 but you can irreparably hurt your card chances on the first day. Three players – Kieran Staunton, Ian Leggatt and Michael Boyd – opened with 77s and are 15 strokes off the pace.

Quote of the day: “In the middle of this grind it’s fun to let it rip and let the kid come out and play,” said Jason Allred after driving the green on Crooked Cat’s par-4 ninth hole and holing the 5-footer for eagle.

What you need to know: The consensus “safe” number most players thought would earn a Tour card was 12 under par before play started. Eleven under was good enough to earn Tour status the last time the finale was held at OCN (2005). Unless officials begin tucking pins and the central Florida winds blow it’s more likely a player will need to get to 15 under or more to earn a trip to the Tour.

Act of kindness: Who says players have a single-minded selfishness at Q-School? Midway through his opening round on the Crooked Cat course, mini-tour journeyman Tee McCabe took the time to carry a turtle that had wandered into the middle of the first fairway to the rough and out of harm's way.
