U.S. Amateur champ Ramsay goes pro

Scotland’s Richie Ramsay will not defend his U.S. Amateur Championship next month, or play for the Great Britain & Ireland Walker Cup team in September.

The Scot will make his professional debut in next week’s Russian Open Golf Championship on the European Tour.

Rumors swirled earlier this year that Ramsay’s intention all along was to turn professional after the British Open.

Ramsay, however, played his cards very close to his chest all season. He even insisted at last week’s British Open that he would be available for Walker Cup selection.

After missing the cut at Carnoustie, Ramsay went home and switched gears.

“I have had a great amateur experience and am hugely grateful to everyone who has supported me, especially the coaches, staff and players at the Scottish Golf Union,” Ramsay said in a prepared statement. “Now I want to go out and see what I can achieve as a professional, and can’t wait to get started in Russia this week.”

The Aberdeen native has signed with IMG, and will be managed by Mark Booker. Booker also looks after the interests of England’s Ross Fisher and Rafael Cabrera Bello of Spain.

Ramsay was a member of the 2005 GB&I team that narrowly lost to the United States in Chicago. Last year, Ramsay became the first British player since Harold Hilton in 1911 to win the U.S. Amateur.
